Christian Kloepfer

The following was provided by Brian Kohler.
Here are two short biographies on Christian Kloepfer, a Canadian Member of Parliament elected 1896. He appears in the list of descendants of Johannes Jacob Klopfer that you sent me as the sixth child of Jacob Klopfer, born 1847, died 1913, and married to Elizabeth Murphy. He was a hardware, and also I think, coal merchant in Guelph. In fact Guelph city directories from that time advertise "Kloepfer Coal" on the cover!
He would therefore have been a Member of Parliament during the time when Sir Wilfred Laurier, a Liberal, was our Prime Minister. As a Conservative, Christian Kloepfer would have been a member of the opposition party which was at that time led by Sir Charles Tupper, who had been Prime Minister (briefly) prior to the 1896 general election. Christian Kloepfer likely served only one term as a Member of the House, since he does not appear in the Parliamentary Guide for 1901, 1903, 1905 or 1908.
Christian Kloepfer's name, like all of our former Members of Parliament, is inscribed on a brass plaque in our Parliament buildings in Ottawa.

Educated at the Parochial School there. Married 1st June, 1880 Elizabeth Murphy, Guelph. Is a wholesale carriage hardware merchant. Has been an Alderman of the City of Guelph, and is a director of several trading corporations. First returned to Parliament at general election (June) 1896. A Liberal-Conservative. - Guelph, Ontario."
